Kingdom vs Religion Reino vs religión

Mark 1:15 [Jesus speaking]:

And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Every time I read this, I can't help but wonder: what does it mean? What does the Kingdom of God mean? Why does Jesus begin his ministry preaching that (1) the time is fulfilled, (2) the Kingdom is at hand [near, therefore]: repent ye, and believe the gospel [good news]?

What is a kingdom?

A kingdom is a territory governed by a monarch, either a king or a queen. There is only one sovereign. For the sake of understanding, let's define the word "sovereign".

It means having supreme power, ultimate authority, or complete independence from outside control.

In a kingdom, the king, queen, emperor, or monarch who holds the highest political power in a state is referred to as the sovereign. There have been many examples of a sovereign in the history of the world, in many civilizations. One example that comes to mind, since I live here, is Spain.

The kingdom honours and respects the royal family. If you are born into the royal family, you have special privileges, authority and power. Whether that is fair or unfair is not the question we are looking to answer today. For most of history, in a country with a royal family, the highest authority belonged to them. They were the sovereigns.

Possibly now more than ever these positions are held symbolically, at least in the West. In the Middle East we still find kings, emirs or sultans who have been the ultimate power for decades.

That is what a kingdom refers to. It is very interesting to me that Jesus didn't begin preaching about religion. He didn't say convert to Judaism, or Christianism, or any isms. He said the Kingdom of God is at hand. It is near, it is so close that you can reach it with your hands.

It seems to me that the main questions are:
1 - What is the Kingdom of God?
2 - Why is the Kingdom of God the highest priority for Jesus?
3 - What is religion according to humans?
4 - What is the importance of religion according to Jesus?
5 - What is the difference between religion and Kingdom?

I have been pondering these questions for years. Why is religion the way it is? Who decides which rituals are holy and which ones are unholy? What is the true religion? Are all religions the same? Are all religions preaching about the same god?

Before we continue, let's define religion: a cultural system of designated behaviours, practices, ethics, worldviews and sacred texts created by a group of people [humans] to connect to the supernatural, spiritual or divine elements.

1 - What is the Kingdom of God?

The Kingdom of God is both a territory and a cultural shift in the way people are living. This is hard to explain, but bear with me.

When you go to a foreign country, you will discover different rituals, different mindsets, different currencies, different habits. In Sweden people love saunas. In Spain you don't hear of people loving saunas that much, but they do love topless tanning at the beach. In Costa Rica, you don't hear of topless tanning being a popular activity, but people love eating rice and beans for breakfast. Rice and beans in the morning is not a popular activity in Spain.

In Vancouver, people love ordering coffee to go and drinking it as they walk down the street. In Spain, people prefer to be late for work and have their coffee sitting down at the bar rather than ordering it to go. These are examples of cultural differences. None of them are wrong or right, they are different.

What the Kingdom of God means is a set of cultural shifts that modify the soul, spirit and body of the person that lives them. In the Kingdom of God everyone is a son or daughter. Once you enter into the Kingdom, which is a spiritual kingdom, you become a co-ruler. You are given a kingly or queenly robe, crown and rings. You won't see it, but in the spirit God is honouring you as a king or queen.

However, in his Kingdom he is the sovereign. That means he is the ultimate authority. In your domain you are king or queen too.

Some people might ask, what is my domain? Well, your house, your group of friends, your places of influence. You are a king or queen. You have a domain on Earth. Your kingdom is not recognized by the earthly governments, but it is recognized in the spiritual places.

The Kingdom of God is looking for expansion. God wants to bring his way of living into your life. Into your domain. In order to do that you need to accept his terms. Once you do, you can submit your kingdom here on earth to his authority. Once this is done, your domain becomes an embassy of the Kingdom of God.

This is basically what the Kingdom of God is. The particulars of the Kingdom of God deserve their own article. But in essence God is interested in your life and annexing your domain to his Kingdom. It is not about conquering, it is about yielding power to the Most High God and in return receiving his power so that you can rule your domain with authority.

2 - Why is the Kingdom Jesus' priority?

Jesus' highest priority was preaching about the Kingdom of God, because there is no religion that can contain God. Religion is simply a man-made way of trying to connect with the supernatural. Because it is not God's way, we tend to add many requirements that are unnecessary. Every religion has these.

When you look at the Bible and the words of Jesus, you see Jesus is talking about something bigger than religion. He is talking about a Kingdom. About a way of life in this new cultural reality. If you are a citizen of the Kingdom and live subject to the highest authority, God the Father, then your life will be connected to his ways.

This doesn't mean that your life will be easier, it means that you will live, rather than survive. It means you will receive salvation, rather than being a slave to death and sin. You can argue that you don't want that, but that is beside the point.

The point is that by connecting your life to the way of the Kingdom of God, you become empowered by the Holy Spirit to access the resources of the Kingdom of God. This Kingdom is where peace is, where protection lives, where healing happens. In this Kingdom there is no death. Meaning when your physical body dies, you remain alive. Without this Kingdom you can't receive any of these gifts.

The priority for Jesus was explaining that the way of the Kingdom is life. Jesus came to save the people. Not to judge. The way of the world is to judge. The way of Jesus is to save. The way of Jesus is to redeem.

The way of Jesus is to connect the natural world with the spiritual Kingdom of God. When these two merge, darkness flees. There is no other way. The light of God shines bright, and when his presence comes he brings blessings, light, peace and freedom. The more this connection is made, the stronger the bond between heaven and earth. You can potentially turn your house into an embassy of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Entering the Kingdom is a choice, because God has given us free will. God has given us a choice. We can decide we don't want him. He will honour that. If we decide we want him, then we need to invite him to come to our domain.

He is not going to bring his presence to our houses if we don't build a connection with him. A connection in the form of an altar. I am not talking about a physical altar, I am talking about a spiritual altar. Spiritual altars that are in the frequency of the Kingdom of Heaven can be worship, prayer, thanksgiving, fasting.

When Jesus says the Kingdom of God is at hand, he is saying, guys, this is it. It has never been as close as it is now. It is the moment to access it. Be part of the Kingdom of God. The door is open.

The door to access the Kingdom is Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life. Whoever believes in him and his sacrifice (he shed his blood for the remission of our sins) gets access to the Kingdom of Heaven.

Many religions get this part right. They preach Jesus, but people come to the cross and stay there. They get the ticket and never enter into the Kingdom. The door is open, but many believers stay under the door frame waiting, when they could enter and discover the majesty of the Kingdom of God.

3 - What is religion according to humans?

Religion, as we humans define it, is a set of tests, requirements and actions we have to do in order to be saved, or go into the afterlife. These requirements vary based on the group of humans that created the religion. This is the main issue.

You can't ask a group of people to decide how a deity should be worshipped. They will come up with terms that are right in their own opinion.

It is as if we needed to ask close friends and relatives what our spouse would like for dinner, instead of asking our spouse. What do the others know? They might have an inclination as to what food is adequate, but only the person being honoured knows what they really want.

This is why I always have a hard time explaining when people ask about my religion. I don't have one. I don't want one. No wonder Jesus himself never said, you must follow this religion.

4 - Does religion matter to Jesus?

There is, however, another way to define religion. We should look into that for a moment. If by religion we mean meaning, morality, belonging, comfort, hope, structure and connection with the sacred, then Jesus talks about it plenty, but he calls it the Kingdom of Heaven.

For Jesus it was important to answer the questions of the people, as long as they were asked in honesty. For the majority of the gospels Jesus answers using questions, but to those who were closer to him and willing to learn, he would reveal the answers plainly.

For Jesus the most important connection was how people relate to God and treat one another. The fact that we have his words helps us understand why the Kingdom of God was so important to him. It is the only structure that will keep you from evil. You can have salvation, you can have connection, you can even feel God every time you worship, but until you establish his Kingdom in your domain, you are exposed to other kingdoms.

Some people assume the Kingdom of God is found every Sunday at church. Others believe the Kingdom of God is the people on earth. I think this can be part of it, but only to the extent that the connection between earth and the Kingdom of God is created.

A church that has no connection with the Kingdom has no power, it is just a building. A house that is connected with the Kingdom of God becomes an embassy. You can have angels coming down into your house every day and worshipping with you. You can have heaven here on earth. It is up to you to decide that, to make your domain connected permanently with heaven.

This doesn't mean you should not go to church. It simply means you are a king or queen over your domain.

If all you have is a room, then that is your domain. If you rent a house, that is your domain. If you have a company, then that is your domain. The beauty of understanding this is that it opens up our ability to connect with the Kingdom of God directly.

5 - Religion vs Kingdom

In short, religion is the rituals, requirements and actions people tell other people to do to get to the afterlife. The Kingdom is where Jesus is inviting us to live continually [by his salvation], in order to redeem our lives now here on earth and also get to the afterlife later.

The way of religion is how we think God wants us to live. The way of the Kingdom is how God is telling us to live.

A tu dominio.

No a juzgar.

No tengo ninguna. No quiero ninguna.
