My Questions Mis preguntas

Let us start from the beginning. I was born into a Catholic family, not devout but culturally Catholic. We did the baptism, the first communion, Catholic weddings, the usual main events. We didn't attend church. We didn't read the Bible, nor talk about God.

The most spiritual person in our household was my mum. However, she wasn't devout, she was an average Catholic. She would do her rosary on occasion, maybe she would step into a church and pray at times. That was it.

I grew up having to do these rituals because I was "forced", it was what one did. I remember as I was growing up I kept wondering why. There was no explanation given.

Why were the priests the ultimate form of authority? Why could they advise on marriage if they had never been married? These questions began to dig deep into my soul. I started looking for answers and no answers were found. No answers were given.

I then began to wonder, why was the Catholic Church making us do the sign of the cross? Why would moving the arms a certain way activate a spiritual protection?

Then I began to question everything. The Vatican, the scandals, the hypocrisy, the conquest of America, the killing in the name of God during the Crusades, the Knights Templar, the forgiveness of sins in the form of indulgences.

Anyways, the conclusion that I came to was that either God doesn't exist or the way the Catholic Church was preaching about God was incorrect. This began my season as an atheist. I didn't continue with the culturally appropriate events the Catholic Church demanded.

During this time in my youth I believed in the evolution of species. Darwinism made sense. It was taught as a given in schools. My grandpa was an avid evolutionary agnostic, or atheist. I actually don't know what he believed, but he made it clear God was not it. As time went by I forgot about these questions.

Eventually I met a girl who was a Christian. I had never been exposed to that religion, actually I didn't know they were a religion. I thought they were a cool group of young people who liked to play video games and talk about the Bible. Little did I know that the video games piece was a hook. They were on a mission to evangelize.

I must confess I met wonderful people. At first it was all fun and games. We would pray and read the Bible, which was a little weird, but then came video games and jokes, so I was willing to forgo the Bible piece to get to the fun part of the evening.

This girl eventually became my girlfriend and we dated. It was beautiful, we were both young and naive, and the "relationship" lasted a few months. It was ended by mutual accord. We remained friends. She is a wonderful person and I have nothing but love and respect for her.

It was as if God was using all of these things to draw me closer. I didn't notice it, but I had developed a deeper understanding of the God of the Bible. I started going to a Christian church and following their rituals, and this made me part of their religion.

Before we continue, let's define religion: a cultural system of designated behaviours, practices, ethics, worldviews and sacred texts created by a group of people [humans] to connect to the supernatural, spiritual or divine elements.

I didn't notice that I had swapped one religion for another. However, God was using this group of people to bring his Kingdom closer to me. He used the Catholic Church when I was a child and now he was using the Christian church too.

Eventually, the questions that I had buried emerged from the deepness of my soul. I started asking the same questions again. This time, the spell broke faster. I was older and I didn't like certain things this religion was telling me to do. This sounds like a morality problem, and it was, but it was bigger than that.

I didn't like the fact that I had to restrain myself from sexual intercourse before marriage, but I also disliked the censorship I started feeling. Everything was forbidden. Movies, music, books, certain places, certain professions. It became a cult-like scenario where I was judged based on where I was and who I was with.

I decided to pause this lifestyle. I believed in God. I believed Jesus existed and the Holy Spirit was real. I believed because I had felt this overwhelming peace during worship. I had repented of my sins and I felt my life transformed.

I still didn't understand many things. I couldn't deny there was a spiritual component to the human being. There was a spiritual world I had tapped into, but I didn't want it if it was associated with the religion's requirements. It was too much for me to trade.

While I paused this lifestyle, the people at the church got word of it and started judging. I lost all the "friends" I had made. They disappeared overnight, it was as if I had the plague. Nobody wanted to talk to me. No one reached out to me just for being me.

It quickly seemed to me that the love and connection I had felt were superficial. Maybe that wasn't the truth, but that is what it felt like. I felt like I only mattered because I was doing the things they liked; the minute I stopped, I was not welcome anymore.

This became more evident when I went to the mall. Before my movie began, I went to the washroom. I was peeing when a "friend" from the church entered and used the urinal next to me. He was so hurtful.

He began asking me questions about what I was doing. I am sure he didn't mean to be hurtful. It was not the right place nor the right time. I felt vulnerable and confused. It was as if I had a parent or a boss asking for answers while I was urinating. Let me finish first and we can talk later, not here, not now.

I was shocked by the whole situation, so much so that I couldn't reply. This person said, oh, you have nothing to say, and then he went away disappointed. I felt crushed, not so much by the exchange, but because it confirmed my suspicion that I wasn't welcome anymore. I was only loved because of the religion component, not because of the person that I am.

This began a very different season. I decided Christianity was not for me. But I believed in God. I couldn't disregard him. He was real, I knew it. The religion was the problem for me.

I walked in my own ways, forming my own opinions, choosing my own paths, and God was with me. I felt him all the time, even though I didn't want him. He was there. He was always with me, I couldn't understand why. Why was his presence with me, when I was not part of a religion, or a church? I was in the bar, I was drinking, I was sleeping around, I was cursing and gossiping, complaining and sinning. He was there.

I decided, ok, this is something I need to deal with, but not now. Let me finish getting my life together and I will come back to this. I wanted to study filmmaking. It was my dream, but there were no funds to afford film school.

I prayed and said, ok God, since you are here with me all the time even though I am not asking you to be, let's make a deal. Can you help me pay for film school, and I promise to make movies for you. In the following days or weeks he replied in the form of my dad agreeing to pay for film school in exchange for me working for him. I was amazed, but I also knew this deal was going to work because I knew God was real.

I ended up studying filmmaking and paying for it on time. Every single payment was made, to the extent that I never had to take out a loan. He blessed me with work, and when my father's company went under, God had already placed me in a different job that paid even better and allowed me to work around my university schedule.

By the time I finished film school I was sure I needed to move out of the country. I ended up working very hard to go to Hollywood. I didn't have any papers or work visas. However, I kept at it. There was a fire in me. I wanted to prove myself. It was selfish and ego-motivated perhaps, but this is the truth of what happened.

I ended up getting a working visa for Canada. I went on this trip and immediately the doors started opening. I knew it was God. At this point I was still not doing anything religious, not praying, not reading the Bible, nothing. I was still living based on my own understanding, not knowing that this way of living leads to death.

When the time on my visa was running out, I started praying. I said, God, I don't know what you want me to do here in Canada. If it's your will that I stay in this country, then I will put it in your hands. I am done looking for a way to stay. I will enjoy every day I am here, and if I have to go back I will do that.

The following day I met the girl who would become my wife. We have been married for almost ten years now. Because of her I ended up staying in Canada for seven years. Doesn't that sound biblical?

During this time my faith grew. I had to come to terms with the conclusion that every time I make deals with God, they come to pass. I worked hard and developed a love for the people; this was God shaping my heart. I don't know how else to explain it, but each job I got was a stepping stone to honour others. I never preached, never shared the gospel. I was also lost and confused and still playing around in sin city, but I began to see the path.

One day I felt tremendous grief. I couldn't keep it inside anymore and I began bawling. The grief I felt was for the homeless people in Vancouver. I could feel a very real pain. They were dying, and it was like pieces of my soul were connected to them. I couldn't stop crying for hours.

I had no connection with the homeless population, I had not even thought about them. It was a God-given feeling. Right after this moment God started placing ideas in my heart that were not my own. I don't know why. I just had to obey. I don't know why.

It was like a force that was so powerful I couldn't deny it. I was not forced to do anything, but I couldn't stop myself from doing it. The best part: I wanted to do it.

I started cooking for the homeless and giving out food to different people. I would feel God telling me where to go and who to speak to. I never preached, never shared the gospel; it was all about giving food. Some people didn't want it, others were happy to be given food. I knew it didn't matter what they wanted, I knew I had to do this task.

Eventually, this led me to conclude that God is not a religion. That is the key difference between God and religion. I am not saying that religions are bad, I am not saying they are good. I am saying religions are religions.

Please continue professing whatever religion you are professing, if that is what you want. I always have a hard time explaining when people ask about my religion. I don't have one. I don't want one. No wonder Jesus himself never said, you must follow this religion.

However, Jesus talked plenty about the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom is where Jesus is inviting us to live continually [by his salvation], in order to redeem our lives now here on earth and also get to the afterlife later.

The way of religion is how we think God wants us to live. The way of the Kingdom is how God is telling us to live. I would rather live in the Kingdom of God than in the religion of men.

No íbamos a misa.

Empecé a buscar respuestas y no encontré ninguna. Nadie me dio ninguna.

Todavía no entendía muchas cosas.

Me hizo mucho daño.

Me sentí vulnerable y confundido. Déjame terminar primero y hablamos luego, no aquí, no ahora.

No podía ignorarlo. Era real, lo sabía. El problema para mí era la religión.

Seguí mis propios caminos, formándome mis propias opiniones, eligiendo mis propias sendas, y Dios estaba conmigo.

Acabé estudiando cine y pagándolo a tiempo.

¿No suena bíblico?

No tengo ninguna. No quiero ninguna.
