The Oneness of God La unidad de Dios
Mark 2:1-12
Jesus entered into a house in a city called Capernaum. Then,
Mark 2:2:
…many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room…
The house was full of people, so much so that it was filled all the way up to the door. As this is happening, outside we have a beautiful story of faith. Four friends came carrying one sick of the palsy. In other words, a paralytic man, one who couldn't walk or stand up. He was carried on a bed.
The original Greek word for bed is κράβαττος (krabattos). But it certainly does not mean a heavy wooden bed like a modern bed frame. It means a portable sleeping mat, thin mattress, pallet or stretcher used by poorer people. In Mark 2:11 the context proves that it was lightweight and movable:
I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
Much can be said of the faith of the four friends in Mark 2:4:
…they uncovered the roof where he [Jesus] was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
Jesus sees their faith and the sick man is healed, his sins are forgiven and he walks out carrying his bed.
When I was reading these verses, it reminded me of Mark 12:29-30:
And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
The oneness of God.
Jesus does something strange. He declares that the most important commandment is:
Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord
שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָד.
Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad.
Shema = Hear. But it means more than hearing a sound. The Hebrew word שְׁמַע (shema) carries the idea of listening attentively and responding obediently.
Yisrael = Israel. But it means more than a geographical place. It makes me think of:
Romans 9:6-8:
For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel… but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
Galatians 3:28-29:
There is neither Jew nor Greek… for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Meaning, if we are in Christ Jesus, we are part of the children of the promise. We are Israel too.
Adonai = Lord. Eloheinu = our God. Echad = one.
Why would Jesus declare this to be the most important commandment?
When we think about the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, we count three, but in reality we are missing one important aspect of the character of God. God does not add. He multiplies. So 1x1x1=1.
The four friends acted as one. All of the same faith, all with the same vision. The unity to make it up onto the roof, and lower their fifth friend, who was sick. This reminds me of what God said when He saw the people building the Tower of Babel:
Genesis 11:6:
And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
Read it again: the people is one… and now NOTHING will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
This is the key aspect of the oneness of God. When we act as one, nothing will be restrained. What did Jesus say about marriage?
Matthew 19:5-6:
For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Interesting. One flesh. 1+1=2. The only way 1 and 1 equal 1 is to multiply them. 1x1=1. Are you getting what I am putting down?
Maybe the problems we face at home, in our work or in our communities are triggered by the fact that we aren't acting as one. Are we adding up instead of becoming one?
One heart, one spirit, one mission, one purpose, one vision, one school, one community, one love.
Could it be that what we need is to become one in our communities, so much so that God says, "Behold, the people is one." Nothing will stop them now.
Are all the departments working together and lowering the ropes of the stretcher carrying the unmovable towards Jesus as one? Are we all on the roof together? Are we helping each other, for the benefit of all, becoming one?
Why do you think the four friends wanted their paralyzed friend to be healed?
I can't help but imagine they used to be as one. All five of them running in the fields, climbing trees and perhaps even working together. We don't know when the sick friend got injured, or how many years he was paralyzed. But we do know that for their group, the moment one of them went down, they stopped being one. The act of lowering him through the roof required attention to detail, planning, conviction, team effort, faith, and vision. If only our sick friend could be healed, then we would be one again.
How many times have we forsaken the one paralyzed in order to save ourselves? The friends could have entered the house through the roof first and left their paralyzed friend above. They could have come to ask Jesus, or tried to convince Him, without carrying their paralyzed friend. But that wouldn't have worked. Why?
Because the moment they started lowering the stretcher, Jesus saw one faith, one mission, one spirit. Even the paralyzed man had to trust his friends not to drop him. They were one, and nothing will stop them now.
This is why the most important commandment is: Listen, children of God, the Lord our God is one. The greatest example is what happened during Pentecost.
Acts 1:14:
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
Then, Acts 2:1:
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
The phrase "one accord" translates ὁμοθυμαδόν (homothymadon), meaning they were united in purpose, impulse or intention—"of one mind."
Finally, Acts 4:32:
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
They were all one. In relational and spiritual unity.
Jesus said in John 17:22-23:
And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
If we want to be successful, we must become one.
One heart.
One mind.
One spirit.
One community.
One school.
One family.
One mission.
One vision.
Are you one with your families? Are you one with your school community? Are you one with leadership? The challenge is that in order to be one, we need Jesus. We can't become one with another person without Him: "I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one."
Marcos 2:1-12

La casa estaba llena de gente, tanto que se llenó hasta la misma puerta. Mientras esto sucede, afuera tenemos una hermosa historia de fe. Cuatro amigos llegaron cargando a un paralítico. En otras palabras, un hombre que no podía caminar ni ponerse de pie. Lo llevaban sobre un lecho.
La palabra griega original para lecho es κράβαττος (krabattos). Pero ciertamente no significa una cama pesada de madera como un somier moderno. Significa una estera portátil, un colchón delgado, un jergón o una camilla que usaba la gente más pobre. En Marcos 2:11 el contexto demuestra que era ligero y transportable:
A ti te digo: Levántate, toma tu lecho, y vete a tu casa.
Mucho se puede decir de la fe de los cuatro amigos en Marcos 2:4:
…descubrieron el techo de donde estaba [Jesús], y haciendo una abertura, bajaron el lecho en que yacía el paralítico.
Jesús ve su fe y el enfermo es sanado, sus pecados son perdonados y sale caminando cargando su lecho.
Cuando leía estos versículos, me recordó a Marcos 12:29-30:
Jesús le respondió: El primer mandamiento de todos es: Oye, Israel; el Señor nuestro Dios, el Señor uno es. Y amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, y con toda tu alma, y con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Este es el principal mandamiento.
La unidad de Dios.
Jesús hace algo extraño. Declara que el mandamiento más importante es:
Oye, Israel; el Señor nuestro Dios, el Señor uno es
שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָד.
Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad.
Shema = Oye. Pero significa más que oír un sonido. La palabra hebrea שְׁמַע (shema) lleva la idea de escuchar con atención y responder con obediencia.
Yisrael = Israel. Pero significa más que un lugar geográfico. Me hace pensar en:
Romanos 9:6-8:
…no todos los que descienden de Israel son israelitas… los que son hijos según la promesa son contados como descendientes.
Gálatas 3:28-29:
Ya no hay judío ni griego… porque todos vosotros sois uno en Cristo Jesús. Y si vosotros sois de Cristo, ciertamente linaje de Abraham sois, y herederos según la promesa.
Es decir, si estamos en Cristo Jesús, somos parte de los hijos de la promesa. Nosotros también somos Israel.
Adonai = Señor. Eloheinu = nuestro Dios. Echad = uno.
¿Por qué declararía Jesús que este es el mandamiento más importante?
Cuando pensamos en la Santísima Trinidad, el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo, contamos tres, pero en realidad nos falta un aspecto importante del carácter de Dios. Dios no suma. Multiplica. Así que 1x1x1=1.
Los cuatro amigos actuaron como uno. Todos de la misma fe, todos con la misma visión. La unidad para subir hasta el techo, y bajar a su quinto amigo, que estaba enfermo. Esto me recuerda lo que Dios dijo cuando vio a la gente construyendo la Torre de Babel:
Génesis 11:6:
Y dijo Jehová: He aquí el pueblo es uno, y todos estos tienen un solo lenguaje; y han comenzado la obra, y nada les hará desistir ahora de lo que han pensado hacer.
Léelo otra vez: el pueblo es uno… y ahora NADA les hará desistir de lo que han pensado hacer.
Este es el aspecto clave de la unidad de Dios. Cuando actuamos como uno, nada nos será impedido. ¿Qué dijo Jesús sobre el matrimonio?
Mateo 19:5-6:
Y dijo: Por esto el hombre dejará padre y madre, y se unirá a su mujer, y los dos serán una sola carne? Así que no son ya más dos, sino una sola carne; por tanto, lo que Dios juntó, no lo separe el hombre.
Interesante. Una sola carne. 1+1=2. La única manera de que 1 y 1 sean 1 es multiplicarlos. 1x1=1. ¿Me estás siguiendo?
Quizás los problemas que enfrentamos en casa, en nuestro trabajo o en nuestras comunidades se desencadenan por el hecho de que no estamos actuando como uno. ¿Estamos sumando en lugar de llegar a ser uno?
Un corazón, un espíritu, una misión, un propósito, una visión, una escuela, una comunidad, un amor.
¿Será que lo que necesitamos es llegar a ser uno en nuestras comunidades, tanto que Dios diga: "He aquí el pueblo es uno." Ya nada los detendrá.
¿Están todos los departamentos trabajando juntos y bajando las cuerdas de la camilla que lleva al que no puede moverse hacia Jesús como uno solo? ¿Estamos todos en el techo juntos? ¿Nos estamos ayudando unos a otros, para el beneficio de todos, llegando a ser uno?
¿Por qué crees que los cuatro amigos querían que su amigo paralítico fuera sanado?
No puedo evitar imaginar que antes eran uno. Los cinco corriendo por los campos, trepando árboles y quizás hasta trabajando juntos. No sabemos cuándo se lesionó el amigo enfermo, ni cuántos años estuvo paralizado. Pero sí sabemos que para su grupo, en el momento en que uno de ellos cayó, dejaron de ser uno. El acto de bajarlo por el techo requirió atención al detalle, planificación, convicción, trabajo en equipo, fe y visión. Si tan solo nuestro amigo enfermo pudiera ser sanado, entonces volveríamos a ser uno.
¿Cuántas veces hemos abandonado al paralítico para salvarnos a nosotros mismos? Los amigos podrían haber entrado primero a la casa por el techo y dejado arriba a su amigo paralítico. Podrían haber venido a preguntarle a Jesús, o haber intentado convencerlo, sin cargar a su amigo paralítico. Pero eso no habría funcionado. ¿Por qué?
Porque en el momento en que empezaron a bajar la camilla, Jesús vio una sola fe, una sola misión, un solo espíritu. Incluso el paralítico tuvo que confiar en que sus amigos no lo dejarían caer. Eran uno, y ya nada los detendrá.
Por eso el mandamiento más importante es: Oíd, hijos de Dios, el Señor nuestro Dios, uno es. El mayor ejemplo es lo que sucedió durante Pentecostés.
Hechos 1:14:
Todos estos perseveraban unánimes en oración y ruego, con las mujeres, y con María la madre de Jesús, y con sus hermanos.
Luego, Hechos 2:1:
Cuando llegó el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos unánimes juntos.
La expresión "unánimes" traduce ὁμοθυμαδόν (homothymadon), que significa que estaban unidos en propósito, impulso o intención: "de una misma mente."
Finalmente, Hechos 4:32:
Y la multitud de los que habían creído era de un corazón y un alma; y ninguno decía ser suyo propio nada de lo que poseía, sino que tenían todas las cosas en común.
Todos eran uno. En unidad relacional y espiritual.
Jesús dijo en Juan 17:22-23:
La gloria que me diste, yo les he dado, para que sean uno, así como nosotros somos uno. Yo en ellos, y tú en mí, para que sean perfectos en unidad, para que el mundo conozca que tú me enviaste, y que los has amado a ellos como también a mí me has amado.
Si queremos tener éxito, debemos llegar a ser uno.
Un corazón.
Una mente.
Un espíritu.
Una comunidad.
Una escuela.
Una familia.
Una misión.
Una visión.
¿Eres uno con tus familias? ¿Eres uno con tu comunidad escolar? ¿Eres uno con el liderazgo? El reto es que, para ser uno, necesitamos a Jesús. No podemos llegar a ser uno con otra persona sin Él: "Yo en ellos, y tú en mí, para que sean perfectos en unidad."
