Fight Anxiety Lucha contra la ansiedad
Mark 14:32-36:
32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.
33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;
34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.
35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
The best way to understand anxiety is to read this story from the Gospel of Mark. What we see here is a great example of how to act when anxiety comes.
Myron Golden, who is a fantastic human being, has a beautiful definition of anxiety that I want to share.
Anxiety, he says, is having faith in the undesirable outcome. In other words, believing mightily in your heart that whatever project you are working on, developing or creating will fail.
It is a false belief. False in the sense that it has not happened.
Beliefs are thoughts in our mind that create feelings in our hearts, and therefore those feelings translate into actions in our hands. If this sounds very cool and well explained, it is because of Myron’s teachings.
The problem is when my beliefs focus on the negative outcome of a situation, instead of the positive outcome.
When I have a presentation and I focus on the negative (I won’t be eloquent or clear, I will forget my speech) instead of the positive (I am eloquent, it will be clear, it will be awesome), I am left with anxiety instead of anticipation.
These two are opposites. Anxiety is a negative expectation of the outcome. Anticipation is a positive expectation of the outcome.
So, that being said, let’s talk about anxiety, because even if we can understand it is a false belief, it is very real. Many of us have been anxious. Sometimes even overwhelmed by anxiety.
Medically, what is happening is that our body can’t discern between a real danger, like finding a snake in our bed, and a false danger, like believing we will find a snake in our bed.
For some of you, the idea of a snake in your bed has triggered some anxiety already, even though it is a false belief.
Anxiety comes when we have a situation in the future that we can’t be certain will work in our favour. Our body, as a self-defence mechanism, triggers energy for us to act.
Big problem: there is nothing going on at the moment, the event is in the future, so the energy is wasted and now we are left with helplessness.
This has happened to me many times. I’ll be honest: I didn’t know how to handle it, but now I do. Not because I am smarter than you, simply because the Holy Spirit told me how.
Let’s see how Jesus did it. For those of you who prefer a more modern translation of the Bible, I have written the same story here from the Amplified version, which I also like:
Amplified version (Mark 14:32-36)
32 Then they went to a place called Gethsemane; and Jesus said to His disciples, “Sit down here until I have prayed.”
33 He took Peter and James and John with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and troubled [extremely anguished at the prospect of what was to come].
34 And He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved and overwhelmed with sorrow, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.”
35 After going a little farther, He fell to the ground [distressed by the weight of His spiritual burden] and began to pray that if it were possible [in the Father’s will], the hour [of suffering and death for the sins of mankind] might pass from Him.
36 He was saying, “Abba, Father! All things are possible for You; take this cup [of judgment] away from Me; but not what I will, but what You will.”
Verse 33 describes something we have all experienced. Granted, Jesus’ fear was real: as the Amplified version puts it, he was deeply distressed and troubled, extremely anguished at the prospect of what was to come.
What was to come was the beating, the crucifixion, and the weight of the sins of humankind at the cross.
Now, when we think about our situation, we can very much feel like we are going through extreme anguish.
What did Jesus do?
Verse 34: he confessed to his friends.
Confession is a word that has been misinterpreted by religion. When a police officer uses the word confess, they don’t mean to tell you to repent of your actions.
What they want is your story. What happened? What is your point of view on the situation? What is your confession?
This is the first thing Jesus did in verse 34.
He confessed to Peter, James and John: “My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.”
Then he gave them two instructions. The first is: stay here. Do not move. This could also mean something like: I will go be by myself, but I need you to stay here waiting for me when I come back.
The second is: keep watch.
The reason why Jesus needed to be by himself was to pray. We know that from verse 35.
It is a beautiful image that is painted in that verse. Jesus went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed.
What a relief it is when we can fall on the ground. I will explain why:
When I read this, I picture a moment of complete surrender. This has happened to me only once.
I was on the phone one evening when the call came announcing the tragic death of a family member. This person passed away in a traffic accident.
The weight of the news took hold of my body like a physical weight. I remember I walked out of my office carrying that weight.
I found my wife and hugged her, then I told her, and in that moment we both went to the ground. We went down quickly. Like we were being squashed into the ground.
I felt the Spirit of God holding me on the floor.
I don’t pretend to match my experience to what Jesus was feeling. I am simply saying that I have experienced the total collapse.
When you collapse, you stop relying on your own strength, and the Holy Spirit holds you.
Jesus then prayed on the ground. He said if it were possible, the hour might pass from him, or in the Amplified version: if it were possible [in the Father’s will], the hour [of suffering and death for the sins of mankind] might pass from Him.
In short, and in my words: Holy Father, if it is your will, let me not undergo this event. Let it pass over me. Let it be removed from my path.
This is a confession too.
Here are all the pieces together:
1. Confession to friends and/or family helps you distribute the burden between loyal people who will love you and help you.
2. Then collapsing on the ground, or surrendering, so you don’t have to carry the weight of the problem.
3. Confessing to the Holy Father how you feel.
This is so important. I have learned that God the Holy Father loves to hear our confession. I don’t mean repentance; I mean he loves to hear what we are feeling.
If we are sad, he wants us to tell him exactly what feelings we are having. This is what we must mimic from Jesus.
Think of any father or mother on Earth who loves their children. If you have children, it will be easier to understand this.
What is preferable: to have an upset child that doesn’t talk to you, or to have an upset child that is confessing to you why they are upset?
How many times have you been able to counsel your child to the point where they have become less upset, or even happy, after talking to you?
This same situation happens when you pour your heart out to the Holy Father in a raw, authentic, truthful way.
Again, confession in this article is not what the Game of Thrones show popularized. It is not about confessing your sins to a higher authority; it is about writing your story. Explaining what you saw, how you felt, what happened according to you.
Notice Jesus’ prayer. It begins with Abba [which means Father]. He came to the Holy Father as a son.
Then he declared the truth, that all things are possible to God. He finally asked: if you can, take away this cup from me, but do not do what I want; instead, let your will prevail.
I know there are many lessons for us to learn here. For starters, Jesus is a living testimony that coming to God is what one must do when faced with a heavy burden. Secondly, coming to God as a son, instead of as a stranger, is the way.
Now, this is impossible if you don’t believe he is your Holy Father. The way the Kingdom of God works is that he is a loving Father who wants to adopt everyone into his family. So before we go back to anxiety, let me explain how you become part of that family.
There are requirements in order to be united with God.
1. We must believe in Jesus Christ.
2. We must confess that he is our saviour.
That is it!
Let me dig deeper into what these two things mean. The first one is having faith that he died on the cross, that he rose from the dead and that he is now seated at the right hand of God.
In order to believe he died, we must also believe why he died. He died as a sacrifice on our behalf.
I know it is hard to understand. People these days don’t remember sacrifices that much, unless you are into witchcraft, which is an awfully dangerous thing to be involved in, but that is not a rabbit I will chase today.
In essence, people understand this. When you do something wrong and you want to make things right, usually you have to pay a price.
Like a parking ticket.
In order to make it right, you have to pay it. Once the ticket is paid, it disappears. Nobody can accuse you of that infraction ever again.
They can only accuse you if you violate the parking laws again. Whether that is willingly or unwillingly, it does not matter. Whether you knew or were ignorant, it doesn’t matter either.
The facts are simple: there is a car parked somewhere it shouldn’t be, and a ticket was issued. The end.
God operates exactly the same. When infractions are made [sin], a ticket is issued by the accusers [the unclean spirits, devils and foes in the kingdom of darkness]. They issue valid legal documents in the courts of heaven to request your punishment and sentencing.
The price of these tickets is death. That is the price. Don’t ask me why. I am not God.
It does say in the Bible (Romans 6:23) that the wages of sin [the price of breaking the law] is death. Something must die for the ticket to go away.
In ancient times, animals were sacrificed as symbols of atonement. To atone means to make amends for wrongdoing.
Sin is a word that has been modified in the culture, but sin leads to separation. Sin breaks the relationship between humanity and God. Therefore, atonement is needed to restore the relationship.
Since many animals had to die to cover each person’s sins, the best solution God decided on was to send his only begotten Son to die for the sins of everyone. Past and future sins.
The Son is Jesus. He shed his blood here on Earth, every drop of it, to make a perfect sacrifice. This sacrifice was so perfect it covers a multitude of sins.
In short, in the past each person needed to atone on his own for his sins.
In the present, Jesus Christ’s sacrifice at the cross brought atonement for every sin in the world. Even those sins that have not happened yet.
That is what believing in Jesus Christ means.
It does require faith.
The second one is confession, because faith in Jesus Christ is not enough. Faith is a massive first step. And here confession means the same as before: saying your story out loud. Your story is that Jesus already paid.
Unfortunately, some souls stay there. They understand it, they believe it, and they feel unworthy of accepting him as a saviour.
Let’s use the parking ticket scenario to explain it.
Imagine that you are at work, driving a company car, and park where they told you to park for that specific assignment. Suddenly, someone is writing you a ticket.
You call your employer. Your employer tells you that they will take care of the ticket; in fact, they tell you that the ticket will be voided, since they have already been given authority by the president (your employer is Jesus; the president is the Holy Father).
All you have to do is believe them. They have sorted out all the legal paperwork in court, and you are free to go without paying anything.
You don’t even need to accept the ticket being written. The only requirement is that you believe, and confess that your employer is answering on your behalf.
If you believe, but you don’t confess that you are under your employer’s authority, the one writing your ticket has the legal right to enforce it.
The payment is death.
It is not enough to believe; you need to confess.
That means you need to say: listen, I am under the authority of Jesus, he already paid for my transgressions. I am no longer condemned to paying this ticket.
I believe, and this is my personal opinion, that most people have no issues with those two things. They can believe and do believe, and they could confess.
The problem they have is with what happens next.
What happens next is religion.
We have made our society believe false ideas, and even we ourselves have often failed to understand the truth.
God created the heavens and the earth. He created all of the different cultures that exist; he created all the different people that are in this world.
He made us all different, so different that we are unique. There is nobody like us. Not even twins who are physically identical are exactly the same.
In this uniqueness we [as the church] have failed God. For years we have preached that God wants to “convert” people into a specific religion. This is the fallacy.
God never intended for his people to set up religions. He never wanted a set of man-made rules to guide humanity into the everlasting, the supernatural.
He always wanted a relationship. That is it.
When you have a relationship with someone, you don’t want them only if they change [that is called conditional love]. You want them for who they are now.
We have failed to bring people closer to God, and instead we have focused on building our own tribes and communities. We forced people to change their cultures and languages, and to forget their customs, in the name of religion.
I believe God cares more about what kind of relationship you have with him than about what religion or church you attend.
Often we will find different groups of people:
- The ones who want the God of: save me now, but don’t bother me when I am safe.
- The group that wants the God of the box. A God that behaves exactly how they believe he should behave. A God that dislikes what they don’t like and only loves what they love.
- The ones that like a God of poverty and sacrifices. A God that can’t ever see you happy, or he will be jealous.
- The ones who are scared of God, since he will kill you at any moment for your bad habits.
All of these groups, and I am sure there are many more, have one thing in common. They don’t know the God of the Bible.
They haven’t talked to God face to face. They might know a lot of information about him, but they don’t know him.
The God I serve, the God I am talking about, is a living God. He is real.
He laughs, he cries, he speaks, he listens, he is silent at times, he can be surprised, he is loving, he is unique, he is holy, and he is desperate to have more friends.
The most important goal for God is to have communication that leads to a relationship with his people. No wonder he also gave believers access to the Kingdom of Heaven.
Now, you might be thinking: what does this have to do with anxiety?
And here is my point.
Anxiety only works when you think you are alone. When you believe that you have to solve everything on your own.
If you were able to have an AI agent that could look into the future and tell you what path to follow, how magnificent would that be? What if that agent could also organize your life, and give you creativity to build wealth? What if it was free? What if it was available to you always?
Except it is not an AI. It is God, and he has been available since the beginning. Actually, he was before the beginning of time.
It is a massive discovery to understand that God is the single most intelligent living being in the history of the cosmos.
You can access his knowledge via the Holy Spirit. Once you understand and believe this, your anxiety starts to lose force.
Every time anxiety comes to attack you, you can do a few things:
1. Recite these words (based on Proverbs 18:10): The name of the Lord is my strong tower. The name of the Lord is my hiding place. The name of the Lord comes before me. The name of the Lord comes behind me. Say it out loud over and over again until you believe it.
2. Read Psalm 91 out loud every night before going to bed. Read it as if you were declaring it. Read it as if you believe it.
3. Use your authority as a believer and declare: “Spirit of anxiety, I bind you and cast you out of here, in the name of Jesus.” [Side note: this can be used to cast out any spirit; just replace anxiety with fear, doubt, lust, shame, idolatry, regret, pornography, adultery, etc.]
4. Pray in tongues. If you don’t pray in tongues yet, then extend your arms as if you are giving something and say: “Jesus, I give you my anxiety. Take it; I trade it for your peace.”
5. Worship. Play some music that you like and sing it to God. Sing it as if he is with you, listening.
6. Do what Jesus did: tell a friend, let yourself fall, and tell the Father exactly how you feel.
7. Pray using Bible verses. Find one that you like and declare it in your prayer. I personally really like the blessings in Deuteronomy 28:1-14.
Do this every day you feel anxious.
It works.
P.S. Please don’t bind and cast out spirits if you aren’t a born-again believer. It could really hurt you.
Marcos 14:32-36:
33 Y tomó consigo a Pedro, a Jacobo y a Juan, y comenzó a entristecerse y a angustiarse.
No moverse.
Punto.
Dios funciona exactamente igual.
Yo no soy Dios.
Llamas a tu jefe.
